Cocktail Menu – 28 Degrees, Boston, Massachusetts

There are times when going out becomes theater in itself, a bit of performance art where you are both actor and audience all dressed up for something unexpected.  In those moments, your destination becomes your stage and your companions (or simply companion) are the players who(m) help you move the action along.  For those truly dramatic nights when you want a truly breathtaking stage may I recommend 28 Degrees at One Appleton Street in Boston.  28 Degrees is a restaurant and bar designed for grand and graceful evenings.  The focus here is sophistication: the food, the room, the attention to detail at the bar all reaching toward the climactic.

Perfecting a great cocktail is the point of inspiration at 28 Degrees.  The establishment is even named after the perfect temperature of a Martini after being properly stirred and served.  However, they also take a decidedly culinary approach at the bar as well.  The cocktail list changes with the season (the cocktail list bellow is for Winter 2011).  The bartenders only use fresh made purees and juices and try to support local producers of spirits and only high end quality brands to the extent possible.  28 Degrees also prides themselves on the lack of major named brands behind the bar.

 

As a side note, the wine list is impressive.  Check it out here.  They pride themselves on their wine menu and for good reason.  I found much to be happy about on that list.  They also feature a different wine maker by holding wine dinners the second Wednesday of each month.

The focus on the cocktail menu is in their straight up cocktails.  The Blue Cheese Martini sounds perfectly suited to my tastes but is probably a bad idea for anyone hoping to have intimate closeness soon after the beverage.  I also found the Elderflower Aviator and the Blueberry Basil Martini to be quite clever.  For winter, I like the idea of the Blood Orange Cosmo.  Over ice the Elderflower & Grape Caipirinha is appealing.  I do have a problem with the lack of gin drinks on the house menu, but that is where my heart goes and thus is my issue to work out.

 

So, if you are in the area and find yourself dressed appropriately, step out for a night at 28 Degrees.  Be sure to give us a review of the show.
