Del Maguey's Single Village Mezcals

Cinco de Mayo, along with St. Patrick’s Day, is to the regular bar habitant what Easter and Christmas are to a devout Catholic.  It is a day when our normally peaceful meditative practice space must be shared with countless throngs of twice a year celebrants who feel the obligation to get extra celebratory and usually in our personal space and/or in our usual seat.  They are the reason your usual bartender has cheap tequila and canned Mexican beer in house in the first place.

 

 

For those who frequent their local brass rail on more than just two days a year and who tend to enjoy a well crafted cocktail, we present ten cocktails to celebrate Mexican independence made with mezcal and not tequila.  Each of these creations highlights a mezcal from Del Maguey.  Del Maguey features a line of single village mezcals each reflecting the terroir and traditional distilling practice of their village of origin.  Mixologists around the world are learning to love mixing with the various Del Maguey offerings and, as you will see in the 10 cocktails that follow, are mixing them in a wide array of concoctions.

 

So, while the world of the twice a year bar crazies will come out on Cinco de Mayo, we at MixPourSip offer a list of ten extremely creative Del Maguey Mezcal cocktails created by ten extremely creative mixologists.  It is our hope that you will suffer the 5th of May with dignity and grace knowing that one of these gems awaits your patient sippage just one day hence.

  • Laphroig Scotch
  • Cocchi Americano
  • Creme Yvette
  • Orange

Combine all ingredients in an ice filled cocktail shaker.  Strain into a chilled coupe glass and serve.

  • 1.5 oz Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal
  • .75 oz Agave Nectar
  • 1 oz Pimm’s
  • .5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1 oz Champagne

Combine all ingredients in an ice filled cocktail shaker.  Strain into an ice filled punch glass while simultaneously pouring champagne into glass.  Garnish with a cucumber slice, a blackberry and a lemon wheel.  Serve.

  • 2 oz Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal
  • .75 oz Averna Amaro
  • 1 tsp Marie Brizard Orange Curacao
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters.

Stir in a brandy snifter without ice and mist Angostura bitters on top. Flame an orange zest above the cocktail for garnish.

  • 1.5oz Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal
  • 1oz Prickly Pear (tuna) Juice
  • 1oz Lime Juice
  • .5oz Agave Nectar
  • .5oz Maraschino Liqueur

In a cocktail shaker, add all ingredients and fill with ice. Shake well for 10 seconds and Hawthorne strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with along lime zest twist.

  • 1 3/4 oz. Del Maguey Mezcal Vida
  • 1 1/4 oz. fresh cucumber juice
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. agave nectar
  • Fresh cilantro

Put 6 cilantro leaves in a mixing glass, add remaining ingredients and fill with ice. Shake hard and strain over crushed ice in a highball glass. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.

  • 2 oz. Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal
  • 1/2 oz. Averna
  • 1/2 oz. Creme de Cacao
  • Hellfire Bitters.

Place mezcal, Averna, creme de cacao and bitters in a mixing glass. Add ice. Stir for 15-20 seconds and strain into a cocktail glass.

  • 1/4 oz Agave nectar

  • barspoon Luxardo Maraschino

Combine all ingredients in an ice filled cocktail shaker.  Shake and strain into a rocks glass over a large rock of ice (Aka BFIC) with no garnish.

  • 2 oz Del Maguey San Luis del Rio
  • 1 oz Blood orange (fresh squeezed)
  • 1/2 oz Lime juice (fresh squeezed)
  • 3/4 oz Agave nectar, 1/4 oz Campari
  • 3 dashes Regan’s orange bitters
  • 1 Luxardo Marasche Cherry (soaked in Chichicapa Mezcal)
  • 1 Blood Orange wheel

Pour first six ingredients in a mixing glass; add ice, shake for at least one minute, strain into old-fashioned glass and garnish with blood orange wheel and Luxardo Marasche cherry (soaked in Chichicapa Mezcal).  For good measure, a copita of Del Maguey San Luis del Rio Mezcal should be served on the side (cherry optional).Enjoy.
