Cocktail Recipe – Corpse Reviver #2

Submitted by Tim Brice on April 7, 2011 – 10:00 amOne Comment

The Bloody Mary is considered the Queen of the morning after drinks, the perfect bar cure for that which the bar caused the night before. However, there are others and this one, the Corpse Reviver #2, is my favorite.

Credit for the creation of this cocktail goes to Harry Craddock who wrote about it in “The Savoy Cocktail Book,” first published in 1930. In it, Craddock offered that “four of these taken in straight succession will revive the corpse again.” If by revive he means headed back to the floor, he might be right.

I’ve seen many recipes for this drink and they all agree on the main four ingredients (gin, lemon juice, Cointreau and Lillet Blanc).  But they disagree on the dash at the end. I’ve seen Pernod, Absinthe, Herbsaint or other pastis’ mentioned.  I made mine with Pernod because that is what I had on hand.  The Pernod worked well in this cocktail.  However, I am eager to try it with a good absinthe.

You can also vary this recipe by adding fresh thyme to the cocktail shaker and muddling it with the lemon juice before adding the ice and the remaining ingredients.  If you do this, strain out the thyme. To really take this drink to it’s floral extreme, substitute Meyer lemon juice for the regular lemon juice. It will be a cocktail your guests will never forget.

As for food pairings, fatty breakfast foods are obvious: eggs, bacon and toast. Mexican foods are good here too,  as this drink pairs well with white fish tacos, grilled meets, avocado and roasted chili sauces.

3/4 oz Gin

3/4 oz Lenmon Juice

3/4 oz Cointeau

3/4 oz Lillet Blanc

Dash of Absinthe, Pernod or other pastis

Mix all ingredients into an ice filled cocktail shaker and shake vigorously to combine. Stain into a chilled cocktail glass and garish with a lemon wedge or lemon peel.
