A skull on a wall at Santeria in Portland

Santeria, located at 703 SW Ankeny in Portland, is one of those great food finds that any self respecting city has tucked away in an alley or on a cart and is so loved by locals that they almost never tell a soul about it lest they have to share.  Run by Chef Roberto Hernandez, this little sixteen seat gem offers up what they claim is some of the best Mexican food on the planet.  I would say that they are certainly part of that conversation.  The food is spectacular and rich with the depth of flavor that comes from the prodigious hand work required of authentic Mexican cuisine.  Simply put, it is a great spot for those looking to entertain a burrito based coma.

Santeria, like many places we found in Portland, offers a clever and appropriately priced cocktail menu.  It is not just variations on the Margarita although they offer those as well.  The selections are smart, tasty, all about $7 USD and, most importantly, accompany the food as well as one would hope.

The Gin section of their cocktail menu offers two drinks based on Aviation gin (a local Portland product) and house made Jamaica.  Jaimaica (pronounced ha MI ka), is a traditional Mexican drink made from dried Hibiscus flowers and is believed by some to be imbued with magical powers.  Drinking this tea is believed by many to be a key to living a long life.  Modern science is beginning to back this claim up as recent studies have shown drinking jamaica lowers blood pressure and reduces high cholesterol levels in many individuals.

Most importantly for our purposes here, however, it also mixes well with gin.  Since I already drink my G&T’s to avoid scurvy, why not add one of these to help with my cholesterol and booze my way to perfect health.  It’s counter intuitive when you think about it.

The focus of our attention here is our take from the Santeria drink menu called the Obi Wan cocktail.  To its base of Aviation gin and house made jamaica is muddled cucumber and lime juice with a lime garnish and an optional sugared rim.  Served as a tall drink over ice, it drinks like a refreshing punch that is subtly sweet and crisp with just a bit of citrus bite.  I really enjoyed this drink.  To make this at home you will have to either buy or make the jamaica.  I recommend making it as it is easier, will be more fresh and you can control the amount of sugar.  I opted for no sugar in mine and then sweetened the drink with simple syrup or agave nectar to my taste.  The Obi Wan cocktail is also a great warm weather drink perfect for company and would perform very well in the punch bowl.  Just multiply the ingredients appropriately.

Go check out Santeria.  The food is great and it is a place run by people proud of what they do and are eager to share.  As a bonus, they’ve got good booze.
