Why I Drink by Brian M. Clark and Modern Drunkard Magazine

I am a big fan of Modern Drunkard Magazine.  Forget the subject for a moment, they just have great and often ballsy writing.  This essay entitled, Why I drink and why mother fuckers need to stop telling me to stop,” by Brian M. Clark continues that pattern.  In the first of our Must Read series, the MixPourSip editorial board recommends that you must read this essay.

Alcohol reminds me that sometimes it’s a good idea to live a little, to take the time to drunkenly knock over a row of Vespa scooters outside a hipster coffee shop and running like hell.  You never know what’ll happen when you’re loaded out of your gourd, and in the disenchanting, spirit-crushing, punch-clock world we’ve managed to fashion for ourselves, that’s an invaluable quality to say the least.”  Brian M. Clark

Mr. Clark has a great voice and is right on point when he describes the neo-prohibitionism that runs rampant in this country.  He describes a wide swath of society that believes nothing good comes from drink (or intoxicants in general) but evil, violence, dui’s, death and teen pregnancy.  I experienced this once when I met a gentleman, a lifelong abstainer from the devil drink, who when he learned over the course of our conversation that I both had a cocktail related blog and had been previously married decided to openly connect the two.  ”Is that why she left you, because you drank too much?”  Seriously?  To Mr. Clark’s point, this guy would have been much easier to stomach had I been drinking at that moment.

He is also correct in describing this class of folk as targeting anyone whose behavior or actions they find contradictory to whatever leanings, be they political or religious or whatever, that they may have.  The same groups that want a more libertarian form of government do not usually extend those beliefs to the habits and behaviors of you and me.

“So the next time you hear a gaggle of uptight no-fn-niks pining about how “there ought to be a law” against something-or-other, as yourself: Who the fuck do a bunch of bothered busybodies think they are to tell the rest of us what we ought to be drinking, smoking, eating, saying or watching?”

Agreed.  You must read this.  Then go get a drink.
